Up this week is 'I Love You' by Willie Griffin from 1984. Self published whilst running a grocery store in Dallas it became a sought after rare collector's item but didn't get any major traction until picked up by Edinburgh label Athens of the North last year when the initial pressing of the single sold out instantly.

It's hard to put a finger on what exactly it is about the delivery and production of this song that makes the self taught Griffin's style so unique. It's an acoustic song that doesn't sound like a typical acoustic song. It's a soul ballad that doesn't sound like a typical soul ballad. Maybe it's the super simple solo over the thrumming of unusual chords. Whatever it is, Griffin smashed it. Such a 💎.

For the cover this week I stuck with playing around with coloured pencils. You can see from the timelapse that the process is a battle of balancing out both colour and detail — a battle which at many points during the drawing feels like it could easily go the wrong way.
